watercolor sketches

what is possible with 4 colors and just 2 workshops?

answer: sometimes, you can tower above your previous limits!

this first image is the instruction image that was created step-by-step from pencil drawing to finished watercolor during a tailor-made watercolor experience workshop for a client with some, but not extensive, painting experience in this medium. the colors used were only 4, and we worked directly from observation of one of the most beautiful bell towers in all of florence, that of the badia fiorentina church, while we sat in the lovely piazza next to florence's medieval, stone city hall with a view of sculptures and gorgeous architecture all around.

the client chose this very challenging and ornate tower as her focus for her second and final artist for a day painting experience. see her results in the second image!

the participant and i both noticed the amazing leap forward in the ability to handle the quality of brushwork and brush conrol, express a sense of volume and definition through value (dark & light), express textures & specific detail without overwhelming the overall image with too much, and create fresh, clean color intensity that is balanced and harmonized. amazing progress in such a short time, and more than anything, a deep enjoyment of being in the moment and exploring the way that your eyes open up and you get to caress every little beautiful detail through the process of learning to capture things in line, color, and shape through painting and drawing.

below: the very bottom image is her watercolor from the evening before which she had done independently from a photo before further instruction from me.
